Main Aims:
To Safeguard Village Defib Readiness and Maintenance:
Our Resilience Group has taken on the current ownership and maintenance of the two public access defibrillators currently sited within Cairnryan Village. These very important public facilities require maintenance and regular checks to be made to ensure they are ready for 24/7 public use as required. The individual devices have their 'pads' renewed on a regular basis and the storage cabinets need to be maintained to ensure that the internal temperature of the cabinets, in winter, are kept above a minimum temperature of 5 deg C (otherwise the 'pads' may be unservicable for use).
Details and availability of our defibs are logged with Scottish Ambulance Control Centres - so their control room staff can promptly direct 999 callers to our nearest defibs as required. The cabinets are locked with a push button cabinet door lock, but the ambulanece controllers will provide the push button codes via the initial 999 call. This linked information system is known as 'the Circuit', administered by the British Heart Foundation.
As to the locations of the defibs, the first installed cabinet is on the wall of the Village Hall at the 'Claddy' end of the village with the kind permission of D&G Council. The second, more recent installation, is at the Cairn end of the village on a small plot of land we now lease (owned/supported by the Parker Family) - near to their Cirnryan B&B. So perhaps one of the principal aims of the Cairn Resilience & Welfare Group is to ensure the crucial proper and continued maintenance of our Village Defibs - in a fit and ready condition for use at any time.
The Community Resilience Plan:
Working with Dumfries & Galloway's Senior Resilience Officer and staff, we have compiled a Community Resilience Plan for the purpose of emergency planning in the village and surrounding areas. This document lists important contact details with folk and agencies that may be able to help following an emergency, or 'near emergency' situation. It's all about making sure that all the right folk are notified to bring the appropriate and required assistance to help deal with the aftermath of such an 'emergency'.
We are ready to help the community with such an emergency but we will always stress that dialling 999 is the first course of action when real emergencies occur.
Gold Award Status: Following on from registering our Reslience Plan with Dumfries & Galloway Council's own Community Resilience staff, we have been awarded their 'Gold Award Status' as recognised by D&G Council.

participants on this website, but D&G Council have copies of the
plan which is regularly updated, as obviously we do. Even D&G
Council hold our Plan details only on a secure database. The
information and contact details can be made readily available as
required, but only in circumstances of genuine emergency or near

Our Cairn Social Projects:
From time to time we will engage on 'social projects'. For example our next project is to provide public notice board facilities on the small plot of land we now rent beside the Cairn end defib. The plan is to have more information on the use of defibs - we think many folk feel their use to be daunting. More use could involve just points of interest and up and coming events - many of us aren't too keen on social media. If locals from the Cairn wish to contribute to such ideas, maybe even volunteer - please just give us a ring (07702 242100).
